Questions On Battery

1Q: What is a battery?
Ans: A group of cells is referred as a battery.

2Q: What is a cell?
Ans: A cell is a device meant for generating e.m.f. on account of chemical actions.

3Q: What is meant by primary and secondary cells?
Ans: (1) Primary: The cell in which an e.m.f. is generated on account of chemical reactions is called a primary cell. It can't be recharged.
(2) Secondary: The cell in which electrical energy is stored in the form of chemical changes is called a secondary cell. It can be recharged again and again.

4Q: What is a voltaic cell?
Ans: The very first cell made by the famous scientist Mr. Volta is known as voltaic cell. It consists of a glass container(called voltameter), dilute sulphuric acid as an electrolyte, copper rod as an anode and zinc rod as a cathode.

5Q: What is an electrolyte?
Ans: The chemical solution which undergoes chemical changes on account of conduction of current is called an electrolyte.

6Q: What is meant by anode and cathode?
Ans: (1) Anode: The electrode through which the current leaves an electrolyte is called an anode.
(2) Cathode: The electrode through which the current enters an electrolyte is called a cathode.

7Q: What chemical actions take place in a voltaic cell?
Ans: (1) Dilute sulphuric acid decomposes into hydrogen and sulphate ions.
(2) Sulphate ions reach at zinc rod and make it negative.
(3) Hydrogen ions reach at copper rod and make it positive.

8Q: What are the main defects of a voltaic cell?
Ans: They are (1) Local action and (2) Polarisation.

9Q: What is local action?
Ans: The loss of electrical energy due to formation of a number of tiny cells within the zinc rod (due to impurity of zinc) is called local action.

10Q: What is polarisation?
Ans: The hydrogen ions liberated at the copper anode make it non-conducting after some time, the phenomenon is referred as polarisation.

11Q: How does the local action defect eliminated?
Ans: It is minimised by amalgamating the zinc rod (coating the zinc rod with mercury). The mercury covering doesn't allow the zinc's impurities to take part into chemical actions.

12Q: How does the polarisation defect eliminated?
Ans: It is minimised by employing the granules of mangnese dioxide around the copper anode which converts hydrogen ions into water.

Writing articles is a time pass work.
For some people it is a hobby.
Interesting thing is, this hobby makes you earn good income as well as life time income.
