Types Of Resistors

1Q: What is a tapped resistor?
Ans: A multi-unit type resistor is referred as a tapped resistor.

2Q: What is meant by an adjustable resistor?
Ans: A wire wound resistor whose ohmic value can be altered within a definite range is called an adjustable resistor.

3Q: What is a rheostat?
Ans: A variable wire wound resistor is known as a rheostat also.

4Q: What is a potentiometer?
Ans: A variable carbon or wire wound resistor is called a potentiometer. It consists of a shaft operated moving arm for changing its ohmic value. The moving arm moves on a carbon or wire wound.

5Q: What are the types of potentiometer?
Ans: There are two types of potentiometers. They are (1) Linear and (2) Logarithmic.

6Q: What is a linear potentiometer?
Ans: A potentiometer in which the change in its ohmic value rests proportional to the angle moved by its moving arm is called linear potentiometer.

7Q: What is a logarithmic potentiometer?
Ans: A potentiometer in which the change in its ohmic values rests in a logarithmic proportion to the angle moved by its moving arm.

8Q: What is the use of a logarithmic potentiometer?
Ans: It is used in the volume control circuits of radio and TV receivers for changing the resistance in a logarithm proportion to produce a linear change in the intensity of reproduced sound.

9Q: What a pre-set?
Ans: A 'pre-set' is a small sized potentiometer whose ohmic value can be changed with the help of a small screw driver.

10Q: What is a ballast resistor?
Ans: A special type of wire wound resistor which is used as a current stabilizer is called a ballast resistor. It is made of such type of material which has a positive temperature co-efficient.

11Q: What is a PTC resistor?
Ans: A resistor made of a PTC(positive temperature coefficient) material is called a PTC resistor or a 'thermistor'. Its ohmic value rests directly proportional to its temperature. It is used for bias stabilization purposes in transistorised electronic equipments.

12Q: What is a thermistor?
Ans: A PTC resistor is referred as a thermistor also.

13Q: What is a NTC resistor?
Ans: A resistor made of a NTC (Negative Temperature Co-efficient) material is called a NTC resistor. Its ohmic value rests inversely proportional to its temperature. It is used as a delay producing device in various electronic circuits.

14Q: What is a varistor?
Ans: A voltage dependent resistor(VDR) is called a varistor. It is used to control the abrupt voltage fluctuations of a circuit.

15Q: What is a LDR?
Ans: A photo-sensitive resistor is called a LDR (Light Dependent Resistor). It is used in light operated devices.
