Radio Technique

1. What is meant by radio?

Ans. A radio (or radio receiver) is an electronic equipment which is meant for the reception and reproduction of radio waves into sound waves.

2. What are radio waves?

Ans. Electromagnetic waves of the frequency range of 20 KHz to 3 x 10^6 MHz is called a radio wave.

3. What is meant by wireless?

Ans. A system of communication based on the application of radio waves and that too without the use of cable etc. between the two stations is called wireless communication or wireless.

4. What is electronics?

Ans. The branch of science that deals with the behaviour and applications of electrons and other charge carriers is called electronics.

5. What is meant by radio-chain?

Ans. A complete system of transmission and reception of signals employing radio waves is called radio-chain.

6. What is meant by radio broadcasting?

Ans. The system of transmitting sound programmes for the use of general public by means of their domestic radios is called radio broadcasting.

7. What are the principal broadcasting methods?

Ans. There are AM (amplitude modulation) and FM (frequency modulation) broadcasting methods which are used generally. The TV broadcasting or telecasting involves both AM and FM methods.

8. What is meant by radio propagation?

Ans. The process of expanding the radio waves into the space is called radio propagation.

9. What are the principal radio wave propagation methods?

Ans. Radio waves are propagated in the form of ground, sky, direct and ground-reflected waves.

10. What are ground waves?

Ans. The radio waves which propagate along the curvature of earth are called ground waves. These waves are capable to establish radio communication upto 400 kms in the frequency range of 300 to 3000 KHz.
